Last week of school!

I cannot believe that this is our final week of school for 2nd grade!! This week, we are going to create a memory book of some of our favorite things and memories throughout 2nd grade!! On Friday we will share these ideas with each other and reminisce on wonderful memories!

Enjoy creating the end of the year packet! If we were at school, we would write first, then color our packet to make it a fun keepsake to look back on!

May 4-8

May the 4th be with you!! haha We are coming to the last two weeks of virtual learning for the summer. Remember, if you are interested in continued virtual summer learning for your child, please let me know!

This week for reading, we are using the Scholastic’s magazine online resource for some questions and activities. We put the articles on the packet incase you couldn’t access them, but I highly encourage you to go onto the website like we did on zoom a few weeks ago. The website has the interactive article, videos, games, and additional activities that are fun and engaging!

Scholastic Magazine Website: sn2.scholastic.com log in under student with the class code: buswing3849

During zoom this week, we will be doing a science experiment with a science experiment writing to go with it. During zoom, please have your child bring their journal! 🙂

Update on Chrome Books: If your family has checked out a chrome book from Hamilton County, you can hold onto the chrome book until we return back to school. This will allow you access to online learning if you would like your child to stay engaged throughout the summer.

Week of April 27-May 1

I cannot believe that we are already starting the month of May!! I miss everyone so much and wish that we were together to wrap up the year. I had so many fun things planned!!

I appreciate all of the hard work you have done over the past few weeks and your willingness to be flexible with our new virtual learning. It’s crazy to think that we only have a few weeks left!

Here is this week’s newsletter!!

Per the district: The last week for student’s work is May 11-15th, making the 15th student’s last day! However, we will get lots of practice and learning in before then!

This week you’ll find some reading passages, grammar practice, math concepts, and tornado writing with an experiment. I choose to have students learn/research about tornados because the impact they made on our city. It’s important to understand what causes them and the safety measures we can take. As always, I try to make learning relevant to current issues or events happening in our world today to help make learning applicable. In past years, we always do a “tornado in a bottle” experiment and the kids love it!! I hope that you enjoy doing the experiment at home.

Here is the packet information for this week! As always, don’t forget about iready! 🙂

Book Club: If you are joining our Monday’s Book Club, here are the last questions for Tigers at Twilight for Chapters 8-10. We will discuss these quickly on May 4th, then transition to the next book! The kids really loved having book club and would like to continue to the next book in the Magic Tree House Series: Dingos at Dinnertime! If your child is interested in the next book you can order it on amazon 🙂 We will begin talking about the first few chapters on May 4th then continue on May 11th. 🙂

Tigers at Twilight Chapters 5-7

It was great discussing the first 4 chapters with yall! Now we’re on to the next 3 chapters. Remember…DON’T READ CHAPTER 8 YET! The author left us on chapter 7 on a “cliff hanger” and we will make our predictions next time we meet!

This week we will be working on vocabulary words and retelling with details from the story.

Vocabulary Strategies:

-Use context Clues: Read the sentences before and after the vocabulary word to get the context of what the author is saying

-Cover up the Word: cover up the word and replace that word with a word that would make sense in context. Reread the sentence to see if it would make sense

Check out this week’s vocabulary words and drawing/writing activity:

Tigers at Twilight Chapters 1-4

Who’s excited about Book Club?? ME!!! This optional Book Club will be a great way to talk about one of our favorite chapter book series: Magic Tree House! The author, Mary Pope Osborne, does a great job writing fun adventures of siblings Jack and Annie on a 2nd grade level.

Next Monday, we will discuss chapters 1-4 and discuss how the author set up the book, the problems Jack and Annie face, and the setting of the story. Use these questions to think about while you’re reading. They will guide our discussion for our next meeting. After you read chapter 1-4, look at the two activities you can do for the first few chapters.

  1. Illustrate: Draw a picture of the setting of Tigers at Twilight! Include some labels of important animals you’ve read about in Chapters 1-4.

2. Write: Create a list of problems Jack and Annie come across in Chapters 1-4. How have they solved them?

Discussion Questions and Activity:

Force and Motion Read Aloud and Science Experiments!

Do you love exploring the force of gravity and speed? I do! One of my favorite things is exploring force and motion through experience and EXPERIMENTS! These experiments are a great way to not only learn and explore, but also practice some math concepts.

Before we talk about experiments, let’s learn more about force and motion through a read aloud read by me! 🙂
